High-performance Toyota and Mazda to do battle at Calder Park

New generation high-tech drag race cars will race in Victoria for the first time at Calder Park on Saturday and Sunday, January 22-23.

A turbocharged Toyota Aurion and rotary turbocharged Mazda 6, which are among the worlds quickest and fastest six-cylinder and rotary-powered cars, will go head-to-head in the Pro FX (Pro Factory Xtreme) challenge.

The Pro FX challenge is being run at the True Blue drag race event, which also features Australia’s leading Top Doorslammer racers in the Australian Eighth-mile Doorslammer Championship.

The Pro FX challenge will pit the factory-backed Toyota and Mazda against each other in Toyota and Mazda’s home state for the first time.

The Toyota Aurion, driven by former Australian Pro Stock champion, Tony Wedlock, and the Mazda 6 by Rocky Rehayem, use factory high-performance equipment and can cover the quarter-mile in the six-second time zone at over 350 km/h (220mph).

Toowoomba-based Wedlock said he is excited to be racing back at Calder Park after a 10-year absence and to be racing his Toyota-sponsored Aurion in Victoria for the first time.

“It’s been 10 years since we last raced at Calder and knowing how fanatical Victorians are about sport, especially drag racing, we are really looking forward to getting back to Melbourne,” Wedlock said.

“Factory Extreme is an exciting new class and the True Blue event will be the first time these cars will be seen at Calder Park and in Victoria.

“We will be match racing the Sydney-based Pac Performance rotary team and, given that they race for another manufacturer, we are not going to Melbourne to come second.

“Our Aurion can accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in less than one second and takes only 15 metres to get to that speed. The Aurion generates as much as 3Gs of force during acceleration. When you tell people that, they really sit up and take notice.”

Wedlock, a seasoned drag racer, said he is overawed by the performance of the Toyota Aurion, one of the quickest vehicles of its type in the world.

“These (Pro FX) cars are awesome to drive and spectacular to watch. Come January, we are really looking forward to showing the Melbourne fans exactly what these cars can do,” Wedlock said.

While the Pro FX cars will run over the traditional quarter-mile, the Doorslammers will race over an eighth-mile.

Qualifying is on Saturday, January 22, from 12 noon to 10pm, while racing is on Sunday, January 23, from 10am to 5.30pm.
